Is Kimi AI Free?

Yes. Kimi currently offers free access on the web, desktop and mobile. The current membership documentation also says that K2.6 in regular Chat does not consume membership credits. Free does not mean that every model, agent feature or workflow is unlimited: K3, K3 Swarm, Deep Research, document creation, Kimi Work, Kimi Code and other advanced features can use free allowances, membership credits or separate product limits.

What You Can Use Without a Paid Membership

  • Access Kimi through the official web, mobile and supported desktop routes.
  • Use K2.6 in the normal Chat model selector without consuming membership credits under the current rules.
  • Use available free trials or allowances for selected advanced features where shown in your account.
  • Upload and work with supported content within the product limits shown to your account.

Important distinction: K2.6 is free in ordinary Chat. The same model used as an Agent inside Kimi Work can consume membership credits.

What Can Require Payment or Credits?

FeatureCurrent access principle
K3 and K3 SwarmUses membership credits in the consumer product
Agent tasksUses the shared membership credit pool after any applicable free allowance
Deep Research, Slides, Docs, Sheets and WebsitesAdvanced feature use can consume shared credits
Kimi WorkAgent and professional workflows can consume membership credits
Kimi CodeCurrently included with eligible membership and subject to shared credits plus product-specific limits
Kimi APISeparate pay-as-you-go Open Platform billing; not funded by consumer membership credits

Does Kimi Have a Free Plan?

Kimi provides free access, but the current international Help Center does not present a named free membership tier alongside the four paid tiers. It describes K2.6 Chat as free and lists paid plans named Moderato, Allegretto, Allegro and Vivace.

A page that calls an older or regional name the universal current “free plan” can become misleading. Use the live account and Help Center as the source of truth.

Free Does Not Mean Unlimited

  • Chat can have frequency, capacity and context limits.
  • Free trials and feature allowances can change or expire.
  • A supported file size does not guarantee complete understanding of every page.
  • Peak demand can affect speed and availability.
  • Kimi Code has separate short-window and weekly controls when accessed through membership benefits.

Do You Need a Card to Start?

You should be able to create an account and try ordinary free access without purchasing a membership. A payment method is required when you subscribe or enable a paid usage feature. The fields and regional options shown at checkout take priority.

When Is a Paid Plan Worth Considering?

  • Advanced tasks regularly stop because the available credits are exhausted.
  • You use Deep Research, documents, slides, websites or agent workflows for paid work.
  • You need Kimi Code frequently.
  • You need Goal Mode, Kimi Claw or higher Swarm concurrency.
  • You need K3 extra-long chat up to 1M tokens, which is currently listed for Allegro and Vivace.
  • You need more projects, storage, scheduled tasks or professional-database calls.

Kimi Free Access vs Kimi API

The official Kimi API is a different product. It uses a separate Open Platform account, API key, balance and token pricing. Free consumer chat does not create API credit, and a consumer membership does not create an equivalent API balance.

What Happens When You Reach a Limit?

  • Wait for the applicable window or billing-cycle refresh.
  • Switch to an available free model when it fits the task.
  • Reduce context, file size or task complexity.
  • Upgrade to a higher membership tier.
  • Eligible subscribers can enable Extra Usage for pay-as-you-go overflow.
